In contrast to normally wired PLCC sockets, the solder contacts of an SMD PLCC socket are positioned and dimensioned to match exactly the solder connectors of the IC. This means that laboratory and preproduction boards can be fitted with these sockets without later having to modify the board layout for batch production without sockets.
